Festival
Summary The Poetry for Peace Festival is a powerfully fresh, provocative, upbeat, and riveting festival consisting of heart-felt presentations by poets and others who come together to spread the a universal message of peace. Combined with community organizations, businesses, faith-based groups, schools, universities, and civic organizations, outreach resources, people from all walks of life unite beyond their differences in hopes of collectively inspiring a new direction of hope, while igniting a new beginning of peace in our lives and the lives of others.
In the past, we involved representation from University City District, Women Organized Against Rape, The National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP), The American Poetry Center, HelpingAmerica.org, Interdependence Day (CivWorld), Global Campaign for Microbicides, Global Education Motivators (GEM), and many others. In so doing, Poetry for Peace has been successfully able to direct individuals to various resources that aim to assist them on their roads to peace. Objectives To address issues that hinder local, national, and international peace, while dealing particularly with the below areas: 9/11 Terrorist Attacks & war * rape, incest & sexual abuse * HIV/AIDS & STDs * domestic violence * cancer & other fatal illnesses * abuse, exploitation, or mistreatment of a senior adult, youth, or animal * hunger, poor-nutrition, debt, poverty, or homelessness * stalking & threats * harassment & discrimination because of race, sexual orientation, religion, or culture * condition of our water, air, forests, and other natural resources * violence in our communities & schools * drug violence, gun violence, or gang violence * drugs & alcohol addictions * death or suicide of a loved one * fear, depression, suicidal thoughts, & hopelessness * mugging, robbery, burglary, or stolen & vandalized cars |
Workshop
Summary
With so much violence highlighted in the media, the Poetry For Peace Workshop is an opportunity for students to address issues that promote violence or simply hinder peace internally or externally, in regards to each of their lives. This workshop has one primary component, which is poetry, and two secondary components, group discussions & dance.
Objectives
1. Provide opportunities for students to become more knowledgeable about various topics in efforts that they might be able to have a greater impact on affecting peace on a personal and social level
2. Allow students opportunities to utilize poetry, group discussions, and dance as means to encourage total self-expression, alleviate stress, and increase social consciousness
3. Create a high-energy, socially accepting environment that welcomes all people from every walk of life in efforts to have a safe space that promotes community and new relationships
